The NHL is expected to announce today that the 2011 NHL Winter Classic will be contested between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA. As NHL fans know, the NHL Winter Classic is an annual outdoor game played on New Year’s Day.
This will be the second winter classic in its short history to feature the Pittsburgh Penguins. The NHL clearly is looking to optimize on the popularity of Pittsburgh star players such as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
The Washington Capitals boast some serious star power, if not more, than the Pittsburgh Penguins. With Alexander Ovechkin, Niklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin and Mike Green just to name some of the young stars in the Caps’ lineup.
